My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

S05E07: Make New Friends but Keep Discord

Could be a Picasso painting as well...

A Discord episode? Love it! A Discord is jealous episode? Awesome! A Discord crushes the Grand Galloping Gala episode? Cool! A Discord almost kills an innocent pony because he was not invited to said gala by Fluttershy? The best idea ev- WAIT?WHAT?!
Um, guys, am I the only person in this world, who thinks that Discord almost went too far? I hope I'm not...

First impression & story: So Discord wants to attend the Grand Clopping Galloping Gala (Why in the living hell this event exist?), but doesn't get invited by Fluttershy, so he's obviously upset. Fluttershy decided to invite a stoner hippie tree hugger Tree Hugger (seriously, Hasbro?) for no apparent reason than plot convenience. Eventually Discord receives a ticket to the Gala and he brings a friend of his - the Smooze. But Discord wants to be with Fluttershy, so he does everything to get her attention, but fails. Oh, and the Smooze becomes large because it feeds on Shining things, so chaos erupts, Discord gets mad, but Fluttershy and Tree Kisser Hugger saves the day and everything returns to normal - except Celestia, who turns out to be a troll.
Wow, I mean, wow. This episode is really weird. In a positive and a negative sense. I honestly hope the weirdness was intetntional, otherwise the episode is only "good" at maximum. And I'm pretty sure that the ending was totally rushed. This is the type of episode I wanna embrace but simply can't due to several factors. Let's see some of them:

The Gala: From all of the key events in the MLP franchise, the Grand Galloping Gala is the one that confuses me the most. First of all, why does it exist? To show off fancy dresses? (Fashion shows anybody?) To mingle with other ponies? (Which you can do basically every day of the year) Why, why, oh why? When the Gala was introduced back in season 1 I accepted it, But in this episode, it didn't make any sense whatsoever. Maybe I'm ranting about this event because I'm introverted and anti-social in general, but still: the Gala represents the type of gathering I hate the most. Y'know, the ones you have to act like an idiot, dress up in the most uncomfortable clothes possible and eat food you wouldn't normally eat because they're expensive and so tiny they make you even hungrier.
Screw this Gala. I'd rather watch a bad stand-up comedy by Discord.

Discord is bad at stand-up comedy?: How on earth is this possible? Discord is the funniest being alive! His mere existence is the proof that [insert deity's name here] has a sense of humour! Yet he can't make a single good joke? And it has to be Maud Pie to crack the audience up? I don't get it, maybe I'm stoned...

Tree Hugger: I'm pretty sure she got stoned before the events of the episode. Or she's that simple. Or she just doesn't give a f*ck. Either way, she was funny - but was not a very good new character. Remember Trouble Shoes? I symphatized with him right after his first appearance. He's the perfect example to introduce a character and make him stand out. That episode was about him. Tree Hugger is a different case though. She was only created for plot convenience and nothing else. She was there to annoy Discord to a point the God of Chaos almost lost his coolness and sent Tree Hugger to an unexplainable dimension. Speaking of which...

DISCORD ALMOST MURDERED SOMEPONY!!!: Geezus! Discord, would you like to talk about that? No? You're right, you shouldn't. Discord is not like this! Yes, as a villain he loved to toy with innocent ponies and look to their world as his own personal playgorund, but he got reformed two years ago! He shouldn't be THIS violent! Jealousy is one thing, but a murder attempt?! No, just no...

You don't like the episode, eh?: I didn't say that. The episode was good, but the flaws above just ruined it for me. For instance, Discord's world is pretty impressive, perfectly matching his f*cked up personality. The little Metal Gear Solid and The Shining nods were cool (Note: didn't notice them until fellow deviants' explaination. Damn, I'm not paying enough attention!) Pinkie breaking the fourth wall - classic. The facial eypressions and the "thing" Tree Hugger did at the end to shrink down the Smooze - nice touch.
And the Smooze. Oh, the Smooze. That thing was awesome! In fact, he was more likeable than Tree Hugger! Obviously he looks disgusting and I think he left his brain somewhere in the fridge, but the way he explored the Gala and accidentally caused havoc whereever he went was funny. I think he deserves an other appearance in a later episode! Unlike Tree Hugger. She's just a happy-go-lucky stoned Maud Pie. And Maud can't be copied. She nails everything - even Discord.
But there's one thing that made this episode enjoyable.

Celestia, the troll queen: We knew it, we saw the signs, now here's an other proof: Princess Celestia is the biggest troll of the entire show. Inviting Discord to see him cause trouble? Making no attempt to stop him? Lady, you have guts. And you saved this episode from receiving a "C".

To sum it up: Making New Friends but Keep Discord is a good episode with serious flaws. It's enjoyable, offers good laughs and stars Discord, the funniest character of the entire show, but due to the problems above it won't be featured in my top 10 favourite list anytime soon.
It's a pity to see Discord waisted for this. Oh well, maybe next time.

"B-"

My honest thoughts about S05E07 of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
Attention: you don't have to agree with me on everything! In fact, I encourage you to argue with me! I'm fully opened for interesting discussions regarding the episode and its background!

Note: I have no idea why, but the pictures in this review and in my previous reviews turn crap after a while (a week or so). Sorry for the inconvenience, the pictures will be changed once I figure out how to attach high quality pictures without turning this much text into a journal entry.
