Tutorial of the Egon DaLatz style
How to make a picture like this one?
If you got here by clicking on the link conveniently placed in the picture description, then let me explain why does the making of one single picture usually take me a week or more. Let's just say that I'm a maximalist and I want my drawings to be perfect. They are very precious to me, y'know.
To make things clear, I present my working methods on my pony pictures. Believe it or not, I create 2-4 scraps/drafts before I start making the final picture - therefore I can show you every single step.
(Note that I use this method not only to create ponie pictures, but other drawings too.)
So, here are the steps of drawing a picture in Egon DaLatz style:
1) Planning the picture in my mind
I know it sounds ridiculous, but do you know how frustrating a f*cked up picture can be? Let alone a picture wrongly planned and carried out? No thanks, I'd rather avoid this scenario.
Seapony Lyra - Draft by EgonDaLatz

"I'm back... with a seapony!" (Plus I have to celebrate my first year here on dA somehow, right? ;))

OK, I'm not gonna lie: I know that "official" seaponies do not look like this. Especially not Seapony Lyra. But I thought that I should do something totally different with her and started working in my "lab" to create this picture. I wanted to reshape her a bit and make her cuter, and the image that came into my mind was exactly like this. And I'm very proud of creating this piece. It's one of my best (1st place definitely goes to Dashie for obvious reasons...)

Note: I think I realized how to properly set up the scanner (or if it's not working, I'll just remove the not so good parts with DeviantArt muro), so now you can see the picture exactly the way it exists in real life. OK, minor cheating here: it's a little bit darker in real life but thankfully the difference is not that big. You may also notice that the blue part of her mane is darker than her canon counterpart, but I had to make it darker, because I used blue as background color, which would have engulfed the blue part of her hair totally, if I had used the same color scheme as in my first Lyra drawing. However, I like this darker blue mane and different body color more; I eventually realized that I was way too careful with the original Lyra picture and I should've had the guts to use the darn pencils! That's what they're made for, right?

UPDATE (October 19, 2015):
I rescanned this picture, I hope you like the result.

Now I wish to thank these guys:
- :iconjohnjoseco: (John Joseco) - body & the concept itself
- Jack-a-Lynn - head
- and :iconbigbuxart: (Quila-Quila) - fishtail
